Victoria had a patient who was actively dying. Both the patient and his wife worked at a sister system hospital for a long time, and one of the things they valued most about this patient was that he was a veteran of this country. At the sister hospital, if someone died who was a veteran, they have a system in place where workers bring a flag and lay it over the body. This was a value they wanted to see instituted for their loved one, and it literally broke their heart when they found out Riverside did not currently share that same practice. Victoria, understanding the last wishes of the patient and his family and being quick on her toes, had a flag delivered via Uber driver from a store nearby to the hospital. Victoria has always shown compassion and empathy towards patients and families, which is why it makes her so amazing to work with, but this goes above and beyond the call of duty of being a nurse. Not only that, but it immediately made all of the nurses, especially me, want to do better for their patients. I have never been more proud to call her a colleague and a friend. The unit was forever made a better place with higher expectations for each other after watching that act of selflessness and kindness!!
