She is the most patient and kind person I’ve met. She is willing to take as much time as needed to properly educate new nurses, in the most gentle and supportive way possible.
Yvonne Gillick has a gift. Her gift isn’t just as a nurse; rather, it could be better described as a gift for nurturing the human soul. God gave her the special ability to mold and sculpt hearts and minds, and she fearlessly uses that ability every day she comes to work. I’ve been blessed to have been able to work alongside Yvonne as a fellow nurse and as a patient of hers, and both have changed my life in different ways. As a coworker, Yvonne never hesitated to take the opportunity to mentor a new nurse. She takes everyone under her (very talented) wing and gives them their own set of wings to fly. She is the most patient and kind person I’ve met. She is willing to take as much time as needed to properly educate new nurses, in the most gentle and supportive way possible. She is the first to jump in and provide a second set of eyes or hands. As a patient, she is truly life-giving. Knowing that Yvonne was working was enough to calm all my nerves. Her gentle presence soothes all feelings of anxiety, frustration and fear and turns them into feelings of peace and calm.
Three and a half years after needing to be transferred to Sioux Falls for preterm labor, I can still vividly recall the moment she was called in to help while I was in triage and the peace that came over me knowing she was there to help. When she said bye to me and said she’d be praying for us as I was wheeled away, I knew she meant it. Then, a few months ago, she was part of my team when my second-born child came along. She provided the same level of kind, competent and skilled care when we needed it most for our Level II baby. She consistently reassured my husband and me, communicated with the physicians while relaying what was happening to us, and provided excellent care to our newborn without missing a beat. Without Yvonne our stories may be very different and I’m so incredibly grateful that she chose to become a nurse because it is certainly her calling.
