She made every effort to communicate with my mother in Spanish and asked me how to say words/phrases in Spanish so that she could say them herself to my mother.
My mother came to the ER on Wednesday morning, and Ms. Yvonne was so welcoming and caring and very attentive to all my mother’s needs. She made every effort to communicate with my mother in Spanish and asked me how to say words/phrases in Spanish so that she could say them herself to my mother. For the first in many years, my mother was extremely happy with the care she received in the ER. Ms. Yvonne went above & beyond to keep my mother comfortable. This initial experience in the ER was overwhelmingly satisfying and my mother wanted her to continue her care, but I had to explain to her that Yvonne worked in ER only. Thank you, Ms. Yvonne, for bringing joy and laughter in the light of a critical situation.

I would like to start off by saying I was not the patient, but I would choose Yvonne as my nurse any day. Yvonne was caring for a Spanish speaking patient this day. I can only imagine how scary it would be to place your life in the hands of a person whom you cannot understand. I recognize that a language barrier can be a huge hurdle. I was lucky enough to witness Yvonne go above and beyond for this patient and their family. If I had not known any different, I would have thought Yvonne was caring for her own family. She made it a priority for her patient to thoroughly understand each step in their care before it occurred. This patient was being admitted, and the family came out to request Yvonne as their nurse when she went upstairs. Unfortunately, this was not possible since she works in the ER. When it was time for the patient to go up to their room. Yvonne made it a point to go and hug the patient and their family and send them off with well wishes. The emotion and compassion felt in the air was enough to bring the patient, their family, and myself to tears. (Happy tears, of course) Almost anyone can be a nurse, but not everyone can impact the care as greatly as Yvonne did. She sets the bar high for this patient, and I want to be just like Yvonne when I grow up. I am eager to exemplify the compassion I have observed in caring for my patients moving forward.
