Zach and the other nurses took care of him full-time, ensuring his comfort. He clearly demonstrated that he was doing everything he could to help treat my uncle, and that he was not giving up despite his extremely critical lab values.
My uncle was admitted to the ICU... Zach cared for him on the second day of his admission. He was kind to my aunt and explained everything that was happening… at one point, I was in the room after my aunt had stepped out of the room. I am a 3rd year medical student...and I told Zach I didn’t know how I was going to convey this information to [my aunt] and my family after they thought he had slight improvements that morning. Zach said he really felt for me as he had also been the “medical interpreter” for his family. He answered all of our questions as simply or as complicated as we needed. He told my aunt and my cousin that he felt a bond with my uncle because they shared a birthday. My aunt said over and over how great it was to see so many young nurses and other providers on my [uncle’s] team. Zach and the other nurses took care of him full-time, ensuring his comfort. He clearly demonstrated that he was doing everything he could to help treat my uncle, and that he was not giving up despite his extremely critical lab values. He was realistic with us, but didn’t give up, and expressed his surprise at my uncle's level of alertness and attempt to get out of bed, failing kidneys, and liver. This gave us hope. My uncle passed away... We have comfort knowing that he was taken care of by Zach and the ICU team. [My uncle’s] whole team deserves our recognition, but I like to nominate Zach for going above and beyond to answer our questions and for his empathy.
