Zhiying Deng RN exemplifies the spirit of nursing. She was instrumental in the care of a patient with special needs. The patient was very anxious about medical staff. However, Zhiying through compassionate care reassured the patient and he was able to receive the blood transfusions that were crucial to extending his life. The care and compassion she displayed made me feel proud to be her colleague. She never wavered in her care. She made sure that all of his needs were met, despite her other workload. His mother asked that we keep him well enough to attend a Valentine's Day party his friends had planned for him. Zhiying made sure he was able to celebrate Valentine's Day with his friends.
She would listen to his mother who was having a really hard time with her son's illness. Although caring for this patient was challenging at times due to his special needs, she continuously cared for him with dignity and respect. His mother expressed her gratitude for Zhiying regularly. She was his angel through it all, and when he became extremely ill she was there to hold his hand. The referring doctor's office from UCLA also expressed their gratitude for the care he was receiving at Huntington Hospital.
On his birthday, Zhiying brought him a birthday cake. His mother expressed her gratitude for the excellent care and support she received. She implemented a holistic approach, coordinating a social worker visit with his mother when her son became gravely ill. Zhiying is a dedicated, compassionate nurse. When her son passed away, his mother called us to express her gratitude for Zhiying's kindness. What Zhiying displayed was empathy, and that was the key to changing this experience for both the special needs patient and his mother.
